10-Code Radio Communication: What It Means & How to Use It
March 31, 2025
How to Boost Your Two-Way Radio Range (Without Breaking the Law)
March 31, 2025A high-quality two-way radio is only as good as the battery powering it. Whether you’re in the field, on patrol, or managing a job site, battery performance matters.
At Safelight Communications Ltd, we help businesses choose the right battery type—and teach proper battery care to maximize performance and lifespan.
🔍 Types of Two-Way Radio Batteries
1. NiCd (Nickel-Cadmium)
- Oldest rechargeable technology
- Durable and performs well in cold weather
- Can suffer from memory effect if not fully discharged before charging
2. NiMH (Nickel-Metal Hydride)
- Higher capacity than NiCd
- Less prone to memory effect
- Heavier and more sensitive to extreme temperatures
3. Li-Ion (Lithium-Ion)
- Lightweight, fast-charging, longest lifespan
- No memory effect
- Most common in modern radios
🧠 Battery Buying Tip:
Most radios support both rechargeable battery packs and alkaline battery cases. Keep an alkaline battery pack on hand for emergencies where charging isn’t an option.
🛠️ Battery Care Tips
- Charge new batteries overnight before first use (this is called “initialization”)
- Only recharge NiCd or NiMH when fully discharged (to avoid memory effect)
- Don’t leave batteries in chargers after they’re fully charged
- Avoid charging below 5°C (40°F) or above 40°C (104°F)
- Store batteries in a cool, dry place if not in use
- After 6+ weeks of storage, fully discharge and recharge before use
⚡ Pro Tip:
If your radios are essential for day-to-day operations, invest in extra batteries and a multi-charger dock so your team is always powered up.
🔄 When to Replace Your Battery
If your fully charged radio dies quickly or takes too long to charge, it’s time to replace the battery. Most batteries last 12–24 months with regular use.
